Former Qwest chief executive Joe Nacchio's petition for a Supreme Court review of his insider-trading conviction could be considered as early as June 18.

The federal government filed its response to Nacchio's petition Friday, and Supreme Court rules state that the case can be circulated to justices 10 days after the filing.  The next conference of Supreme Court justices, where petitions are considered, is June 18.  The final conference of the current term is June 25 before the justices break until the October term.  A decision is generally announced a few days after the petition is considered during a conference.

Nacchio's attorneys can still file a reply brief in response to the government's arguments, though Supreme Court rules state that circulation of the case will not be delayed pending the reply brief, if there is one.

Nacchio was convicted on 19 counts of illegal insider trading in 2007.  He began serving a six-year prison term in April.
