Qwest-branded wireless service is headed the way of Betamax.

Denver-based Qwest began notifying customers this month that its brand cellphone service will discontinue at the end of October, spokeswoman Johnna Hoff said.

Subscribers of the service, which was marketed through a partnership with Sprint Nextel, will have to switch to Verizon Wireless to continue receiving bundled discounts.  Qwest offers discounts of up to $25 a month to customers who purchase two or more services, such as home phone and Internet.

Qwest in May announced it was replacing Sprint with Verizon as its wireless partner.  But instead of selling Qwest-branded wireless service, the company sells Verizon service as part of the bundle and has since August.

Qwest had 717,000 wireless customers at the end of 2008.  Unclear is how many of them were Qwest wireless customers, as the figure includes customers who subscribe to Verizon through Qwest.
