Federal prosecutors have been granted a one-week extension to respond to former Qwest chief executive Joe Nacchio's motion for a new trial.

Prosecutors were to respond by Monday but need until April 6 because the "response will require the review of a great deal of trial transcripts as well as deposition transcripts," according to a filing Tuesday in Denver federal court.

The government said Nacchio did not oppose the motion for the extension, which was approved Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Marcia Krieger.

Nacchio was convicted on 19 counts of illegal insider trading in 2007 and sentenced to six years in prison. A federal appeals court upheld the conviction last month.

Maureen Mahoney, Nacchio's attorney, has asked Krieger to grant Nacchio a new trial because of newly discovered evidence.
