UnitedHealthcare, the second-largest medical insurer in Colorado, has renewed its contract with Exempla Healthcare, continuing a partnership that affects about 750,000 Colorado residents.

UnitedHealthcare provides medical coverage to some of the largest employers in the state, including Qwest Communications, Xcel Energy, the state of Colorado, Denver Public Schools and Jefferson County Public Schools, a spokeswoman said Monday.

The agreement takes effect Jan. 1 and is set to expire at the end of 2010.  The two companies have had a business partnership since 1995.

Exempla Healthcare manages Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, St. Joseph Hospital in Denver and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette.

The agreement also gives UnitedHealthcare members access to more than 60 doctors in the Exempla Physician Network.
