  First job:  Platoon leader, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment

"I was responsible for the welfare of 40 soldiers," Allen said.  "I trained them and made sure they were ready for deployment.  We also maintained our vehicles and weapons."

Allen was in the position for one of his four years in the military.  During that time, he feels he gained a strong understanding of loyalty, commitment, management and leadership.

"I learned leadership is about facilitating other people's achievements and not your own," he added.

The position only paid $312 a month, and Allen was far away from friends and family.  But he enjoyed working with a diverse group of people while building the confidence to lead others
