WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said on Monday there was progress on comprehensive pension legislation and it could reach the chamber's floor by next week.

Senate leaders were ``very, very, very close'' to an agreement to bring the bill to the floor, Frist, a Tennessee Republican, told the Senate.  ``We will be able to do that before Thanksgiving (November 24) as well, if we continue to make the progress that we've made over the last two weeks,'' he said.

The bill's chances improved last Thursday when two senators lifted procedural objections to the measure.  It rewrites rules governing corporate pensions and seeks to improve the outlook for the U.S. pension insurance agency, while granting relief to struggling airlines.
