A day after members of the Communications Workers of America rejected a contract offer from Qwest, officials from both sides met Wednesday to lay out plans for additional talks and a contract extension.

The CWA represents 20,000 workers in 13 states who have already approved a strike, although both sides whose previous contract expired Tuesday said a walkout is unlikely for now.

Union officials hoped to narrow by late Wednesday the key reasons why workers rejected Qwest's offer.
