The sale of D.C. United to an investment group that includes the pro soccer team's president, a former Duke University basketball star and the founder of Discovery Communications is complete.  The club plans to announce the new ownership group Jan. 8.

The new owners bought the club from Anschutz Entertainment Group, which runs three other Major League Soccer teams and is headed by Colorado billionaire Philip Anschutz.

The purchase price couldn't be determined Friday.

D.C. United President Kevin Payne assembled the investment group that made the purchase.  Also in the group are former Duke player Brian Davis, who runs a real estate development firm, and John Hendricks, founder and chairman of Silver Spring, Md.-based Discovery Communications who also established the Women's United Soccer Association.

The Washington Business Journal reported in June 2006 that an investment group including Payne, Hendricks and Davis was nearing a deal to buy D.C. United from Anschutz.

D.C. United officials declined to comment Friday on the sale.  A spokesman for Anschutz Entertainment Group couldn't be reached for immediate comment.

D.C. United officials said in a Jan. 5 news release that they will hold a press conference Jan. 8 to announce the club's new ownership group.  Payne, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and others are expected to attend the press conference.
