New York Times columnist Gretchen Morgenson recently gave out her 2005 Augustus Melmotte prizes, named for a stock promoter in Anthony Trollope's novel, The Way We Were, who was the toast of London before the railroad stock he was selling turned out to be worthless.

Ex-Qwest CEO Joe Nacchio got "The Hope You Haven't Spent It All Award."  She notes the insider trading cases against Nacchio filed toward the end of the year, in which he's accused of selling $100 million in Qwest stock while he knew it was in a nose-dive.  "Mr. Nacchio said he looked forward to clearing his name in court," Morgenson wrote.  "So did Mr. Ebbers."
